Most of the time, users overlook the importance of preparing their computers before a move or a relocation. Getting your computer ready would help your transition and possibly save you data and money. Here are some tips we’ve collected over the years:
- As always, back-up all your data. In most cases moving your computer shouldn’t cause any damage but to be on the safe side you should have a copy of all your important data on a third party storage system (External hard drive that is located elsewhere and moved separately / or a Cloud Backup)
- Label each users computer and accessories with a Label Maker. Labeling would help you know where everything goes. In the event of an office move with multiple computers, it would make sure your stuff stays yours (Yes, we all love our own keyboard/mouse).
- Turn off all accessories. Printers, Scanners even wireless keyboards and mice sometimes have an ON/OFF Switch in the back.
- Take a few photos of your computer’s front and back before unplugging it. This could give you an idea where things need to connect if you don’t remember
- Shutdown your machine and then carefully disconnect all cables and external USB drives/printers/etc. Attach each cable to its device (we usually use Gaffer's Tape because it doesn’t leave marks). We also recommend writing on each power adapter which device it belongs to (with a label or even with a sharpie, directly on the power adapter).
- Always use a Bubble Wrap and a cardboard box for packing your desktop pc/monitor.
- for Apple iMacs we recommend purchasing a Foam Wedge that will protect the delicate neck.
- Try not to bend or twist your cables too much, it can cause damage. If possible, try to roll each cable separately.
